Aurora partners with Amazon Web Services on autonomous vehicle development
Self-driving startup Aurora has announced it will be using data giant Amazon Web Services to power its cloud-based machine learning and simulation-based development for autonomous vehicle tech.
Aurora, which received investments from Hyundai and Kia back in 2019 and went on to acquire Uber's autonomous-vehicle business last year, has also partnered most recently with Volvo on autonomous trucks and Toyota to develop a fleet of self-driving Siennas.
The AV startup will make use of AWS' capabilities both online and off. Offline, Aurora will also make use of AWS for testing, high-definition mapping, machine learning and development of the Aurora Driver software stack. In the cloud, Aurora will use AWS to crunch and store the petabytes of sensor data collected during real-world road tests. Additionally, it plans to run up to 12 million physics-based driving simulations per day through its AWS-powered Virtual Testing Suite by the end of 2021. That's a whole lot of robo-driving practice.
AWS will be used to store and crunch the petabytes of data generated during real-world testing.

This week, at the Re:Invent conference in Las Vegas, Amazon Web Services also announced its AWS for Automotive initiative and AWS IoT Fleetwise service, courting automakers, startups, fleets managers and logistics companies with "purpose-built tools for connected mobility, autonomous development, digital customer engagement, product design and engineering, manufacturing and supply chain." Autonomous and connected cars are just the latest feathers in the cap of AWS, already one of the world's largest providers of cloud computing and storage services reaching into pretty much every corner of the internet.

Seth Green's Stolen NFT Ape 'Is Home,' Safe and Digitally Sound
Seth Green's stolen Bored Ape NFT is his again, ending a saga of uncertain ownership and theft that held up development of an animated TV series.
In total, four of Green's NFTs worth more than $300,000 were stolen in May when the actor fell for a phishing scam. The most valuable was one of the Bored Ape NFTs (#8398), which can be seen safely returned to Green's "Fred_Simian" NFT vault -- though it cost him $297,000 in ethereum to buy it back from whoever had it, as reported early by BuzzFeed.
Green confirmed to BuzzFeed that he has regained custody of his digital ape.
Green's Bored Ape was to be included in an animated TV show he is developing. He was confident that since his NFT would be considered stolen art, whoever bought it -- someone with the moniker DarkWing84 -- and refused to return it wouldn't be "legally entitled to exploitation usage" of the IP. It's unclear if the show's development was impacted by the theft.
Green tweeted several times reaching out and threatening legal action against DarkWing84, an alias for one Mr. Cheese who had bought Bored Ape #8398 after it had been stolen. In total, Green paid around $100,000 more for the safe return of #8398 than Cheese paid for it, according to BuzzFeed.

Genesis, Hyundai Dominate J.D. Power 2022 Tech Experience Study
Genesis, Hyundai Dominate J.D. Power 2022 Tech Experience Study
J.D. Power has released its annual U.S. Tech Experience Index for 2022, ranking the most innovative automakers and models on the market and calling out the features owners love and love to hate. And after taking the top spots of the 2022 Vehicle Dependability Study, Korean sister brands Genesis, Hyundai and Kia find themselves at the top of the chart as the innovative brands in their respective segments.
A companion piece to J.D. Power's Initial Quality Study, the Tech Experience Index is based on the responses of 84,165 owners of new 2022 model year vehicles surveyed after 90 days of ownership. The survey seeks to find what technologies owners find the most desirable and which ones frustrate them the most. Along the way, the automakers themselves are ranked by a calculated Innovation Index to determine which ones are most successfully introducing the best new tech.
J.D. Power's analysts calls new vehicle technology a "double-edged sword," stating that tech is one of the leading reasons for purchasing a new car and that automakers must continue to innovate or risk losing their competitive edge. However, inelegant implementation of tech or a high occurrence of problems could cause users to abandon a technology or even a brand outright. These are tricky waters and not everyone's doing a great job navigating them.
Biometric tech, like fingerprint scanners and facial recognition, can be used to log into infotainment, but users seem to prefer phone-based authentication.
Continental
The biggest loser
Fingerprint readers were found to be the most problematic technology probed with 54.3 problems found per 100 vehicles surveyed as part of the study. That makes it the lowest-performing tech in the study's history with the lowest overall satisfaction score, dethroning the previous record-holder: gesture controls.
Biometric fingerprint authentication is most commonly used for login on infotainment suites like Mercedes-Benz's User Experience that support multiple users or, more rarely, to lock or unlock a vehicle. Considering how well fingerprint readers have been implemented in smartphones, tablets and personal computers, the surveyed users' low ranking of the tech is surprising. It's possible they were displeased with the execution of the tech in cars or, perhaps, just find too complicated in contrast to other authentication technologies, such as phone-based digital key tech — which was the third-highest ranked technology surveyed.
Award-winning technologies
No surprise, the technologies that gave users the least trouble were the most simple in concept and execution. The Cadillac Escalade and Subaru Ascent each took home Advanced Technology Convenience Awards in the premium and mass-market categories, respectively, for camera rear-view mirror technology that allows users to flip a switch to change the optical mirror at the top of the windshield to a camera view via a screen hidden within the glass. Cadillac was recognized last year for the same tech.
Accolades for "emerging automation" or driver aid technology went to the premium Lexus IS for its front cross traffic warning system and the mass-market Mitsubishi Outlander for its implementation of reverse automatic emergency braking. Again, not the most cutting edge features — both have been around for years now — but trouble-free implementations of proven tech that left surveyed customers satisfied.
Cadillac and Subaru won awards for their desirable and reliable rear-view mirror camera tech.

J.D. Power also awarded the Mini Cooper (presumably the fully-electric model) an energy and sustainability award for its one-pedal driving mode. This EV feature promotes maximum range-extending regenerative braking when lifting the accelerator pedal, so much so that the car can be brought to a stop often without touching the friction brakes. Elsewhere in the BMW Group, the BMW X3 received recognition for its phone-based digital key tech.
Korean brands lead innovation
Crunching the numbers, J.D. Power assigns each automaker an Innovation Index score scaled from 0-1,000, higher being better. American electric vehicle company Tesla would have been the outright winner with an unofficial score of 681 points. However, because Tesla blocks JPD's access to owner information in certain states, the automaker finds itself ineligible for awards. Swedish premium EV brand Polestar also finds itself ineligible with an unofficial score of 608 points.
That leaves room for the Korean luxury upstart Genesis to slide in and once again take the crown for the highest officially ranked premium and overall brand with an Innovation index of 643. The G70 and GV70 are best-in-classes vehicles packed with user-friendly cabin and driver aid technologies; no wonder the brand finds itself the survey's king of this hill. The next highest ranked premium brands are Cadillac (584), known for its Super Cruise hands-free highway assist tech, and Mercedes-Benz (539) which launched the high-tech, electric EQS this year.
Korean brands continue to dominate among the mass-market brands with Hyundai leading the pack with 534 points — not too far behind Benz — followed by its sister brand Kia at 495 points. These brands share many key technologies with Genesis, hence the similarly high score. Third-place is a three-way tie (482) between Buick, GMC and Subaru.
For context, the industry average sits at a caluculated Innovation Index of 486 points. And because I know you're curious, the lowest ranked brands are Porsche (439), Honda and Chrysler (tied at 429) with Mazda being the least innovative brand of 2022 with its 387 Innovation Index — which makes sense given Mazda's minimalist approach to tech.

GeForce Now Adds Surround Sound to Cloud Gaming
Nvidia keeps upping its game for subscribers to its GeForce Nowcloud-gaming service, which since March has already gotten try-before-you-buy game demos, 4K support for PCs and Macs, 120 frames per second at 1440p to browsers and more. Now, with the 2.0.44 update to its PC and Mac apps, Priority subscribers will be able to enable 5.1 surround and RTX 3080 subscribers will be able to use 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound.
That makes GeForce Now the first service to offer more than just stereo. It also signals a welcome move to improve sound quality for the service, offering more than just faster, higher-resolution graphics -- it'll be the first service to make this offer.
GFN is no slouch when it comes to adding supported games, either. That's probably easier, considering Nvidia's bring-your-own-games business model.

Anheuser-Busch Settles Bud Lite 'Ritas' Lawsuit: Here's How to Get Your Money
Anheuser-Busch has agreed to resolve a class-action lawsuit that says the brewer's line of "Ritas" malt beverages don't contain any distilled spirits or wine, despite packaging that suggests they're margaritas, mojitos and wine spritzers.
In a complaint filed in the US. District Court of Southern New York in September 2020, plaintiffs Megan Browning and Adam Kesselring accused the brewing company of false advertising, fraud and breach of warranty by using terms like "sparkling margarita," "mojito" "sangria" and "rosé," in packaging, as well as images of cocktail and wine glasses.
Only a small disclaimer on the bottom of the box indicates Ritas are actually "malt beverage[s] with natural flavors and caramel color," according to the complaint.
A judge issued preliminary approval of the settlement on July 19, and the RitasSettlement.com claims site launched in August. A final approval hearing is slated for Dec. 2.
Anheuser-Busch declined to comment on the case but, in court filings, the company said its desire to settle the dispute was not an admission of wrongdoing.
Below, find out if you qualify for a payment from Anheuser-Busch, how much you could get and when checks could start going out.
What is Anheuser-Busch accused of in this class action lawsuit?
In 2012, Anheuser-Busch introduced Bud Light Lime Ritas, a line of 8% alcohol flavored malt beverages available in eight-ounce and 25-ounce cans.
But, according to plaintiffs in Browning, et al., v. Anheuser-Busch, despite names like "Lime-a-Rita" and "Straw-ber-Rita" -- and advertising that touts its "classic margarita flavor"-- the beverages contain no tequila, liquor or wine, "just flavored beers that taste like margaritas, mojitos or wines."
Adults who bought Ritas beverages between Jan. 1, 2018, and July 19, 2022, can be compensated as part of the proposed settlement, even without proof of purchase.

"Reasonable consumers did not know, and had no reason to know, that the products were, and continue to be, falsely and deceptively packaged," the plaintiffs contend. "Nowhere on the front, sides, or top panel of the packaging… does [Anheuser-Busch] state that the products do not have distilled liquor or wine."
They maintain they wouldn't have purchased the beverages if they knew what was in it, or paid as much as they did.
In addition to the cash payout, Anheuser-Busch -- which also manufactures Budweiser and Michelob -- has agreed to change its marketing to better inform consumers about the nature of the Ritas line. Packaging will now contain the phrase "malt beverage" and the Ritas website will also disclose that the product line "does not contain distilled spirits."
Who is eligible for a payment from the Anheuser-Busch settlement?
Any adult 21 or over who purchased one or more of the 112 different Ritas beverage options between Jan. 1, 2018, and July 19, 2022, is eligible to file a claim. Proof of purchase is not required.
How much is Anheuser-Busch compensating 'Rita' drinkers?
The total cash amount hasn't been disclosed, but according to the proposed settlement, class members can receive a cash payment based on the number and size of Ritas beverages they purchased between Jan. 1, 2018, and July 19, 2022.
No receipt is required, though class members with proof of purchase can collect up to $21.25 per household. Those without proof of purchase are capped at $9.75.
The proposed breakdown of payments is as follows:
For eight-ounce cans, consumers can receive 30 cents for each four-pack purchased or 60 cents for every case (24-pack).
For 12-ounce bottles or cans, consumers can receive 15 cents for every four-pack, 25 cents for each six-pack, 45 cents for each 12-pack and 85 cents for every case.
For 16-ounce cans, class members will receive 20 cents for each four-pack or 30 cents for each six-pack.
For every 22-ounce bottle, class members can receive 10 cents.
For 25-ounce cans, class members can receive 10 cents for a single can or 15 cents for a two-pack.
Any other Ritas product not listed above is eligible for a 50-cent payment.
The deadline to file a valid claim is Dec. 16, 2022. The deadline to be excluded from the settlement and retain the right to file a separate lawsuit is Nov. 11, 2022.
To apply for a cash payment in the settlement you can file an online claim form. You can also print out a physical form on the RitaSettlement.com website and send it to:
Browning v. Anheuser-Busch Administrator P.O. Box 5176 Portland, OR 97208-5176
When will I receive payment?
A hearing to give final approval to the deal is scheduled for Dec. 2, 2022. After then, appeals may be filed and legal fees disbursed.
According to the proposed settlement, payments must be completed within six months of the Dec. 2 hearing.
For more on class action settlements, find out if you're eligible for money from Capital One's $190 million payout, T-Mobile's $350 million data breach case or Snapchat's $35 million biometric privacy settlement.

Google Says Search Got Much Better at Identifying Spam Sites Last Year
Google Says Search Got Much Better at Identifying Spam Sites Last Year
Google Search caught six times more spam sites in 2021 than it did in 2020, according to a Webspam report published by Google on Thursday. The Alphabet subsidiary lauded its AI-based spam-prevention system called SpamBrain, which it said has helped keep "more than 99% of searches spam-free."
SpamBrain has helped prevent users from clicking to harmful sites that might inject malware and to scam sites that aim to trick people into revealing personal information or wiring money, the search giant said. AI-based systems are necessary given that spammers are constantly finding ways to circumvent the company's filters, Google said.
Search is Google's most significant revenue driver, making it important for the company that high quality and safe sites rise to the top of its results. Spam sites use search engine optimization, or SEO, techniques to artificially improve their search rankings. Google filters out spam sites designed to trick its algorithm.
SpamBrain led to a 70% reduction in hacked spam, Google said. Hacked spam involves hackers infecting websites with harmful code that can record people's keystrokes and steal their login credentials. Other types of hacked spam can inject malware onto people's computers and redirect them to malicious sites. SpamBrain helps keep these websites out of Google Search, Google said.
"Scammers often attempt to create low quality websites with keyword stuffing, logos of brands they're imitating, and a phone number they want you to call," Ned Adriance, policy communications manager at Google, said in an email. "Our algorithmic solutions work to make sure that scam and fraud are very unlikely to show up in your search results."
Google said it also reduced gibberish spam by 75%. Gibberish spam involves malware or scam sites that use keyword-stuffed nonsensical sentences in an attempt to boost their ranking. Spam sites can also use link spam to game Google's quality signal, known as PageRank. This is done by having other sites link to them, sometimes by offering money, to boost ranking.
"We have many solutions to identify and nullify link spam, and sites engaging in link spam are wasting valuable time and money that could be better invested in better content or user experience," said Adriance.
SpamBrain launched in 2018. Google says search was able to catch 200 times more spam sites last year compared with when it first started weeding out malicious sites nearly two decades ago. Still, it's an ongoing battle between those aiming to abuse or narrowly skirt the company's quality guidelines and Google trying to elevate valuable content.
