Apple Touts App Store Job Creation and Small Business Growth
Apple on Wednesday highlighted research that says the iOS app economy now supports more than 2.2 million jobs in the US and is helping fuel success for small businesses. The two new pieces of research -- one from economists it hired at Analysis Group and the other from the Progressive Policy Institute -- come as Apple faces continued accusations that the power it wields over its App Store hurts competition and innovation.
While earnings for all developers on the app store grew over the past two years, small developers -- defined as those earning up to $1 million a year with fewer than 1 million downloads -- saw the most notable jump, according to the Analysis Group report, which was based on data provided by Apple. Total App Store earnings of small developers that were active in 2019 increased by 113% over the past two years, with small developers in the US seeing an increase of 118% since 2019, according to the report.
"More than 90% of developers on the App Store are considered small developers, and the App Store ecosystem continues to attract thousands of new small developers every year," the study's authors at Analysis Group wrote.
Apple and other tech giants face continued scrutiny over how much power they should have over their respective app stores and platforms. Lawmakers, regulators and developers have argued that Apple should loosen its restrictions, which don't allow for alternative app stores or alternative payment systems for in-app purchases.
Apple has relaxed some rules amid regulatory pressure. Last month, the company began letting some "reader" apps, such as music and video streaming services, direct customers to their website outside the App Store to sign up for subscriptions.

Recent Report Acuses Aidvantage of Misleading Student Loan Borrowers: What to Know
Maximus, which manages federal student loans under the name Aidvantage, has been accused of mismanaging some borrowers' student loan accounts. A March 2022 report from the Student Borrower Protection Center and the Communications Workers of America accuses the loan servicer of engaging in "unfair debt practices."
The report alleges that Maximus may have mismanaged some accounts, and that its "sloppy and potentially unlawful student loan servicing" and "unfair debt collection practices" have resulted in "unlawful wage garnishment and seizure of public benefits." The report also includes screenshots from account holders who allege they received incorrect account information or were requested to repay loans that were on pause. (The federal government's moratorium on student loans was recently extended to Aug. 31, 2022.)
Maximus pushed back. "There are significant errors of fact and context in the report ... that grossly mischaracterize the work we do for the Department of Education Federal Student Aid (FSA), and inaccurately describe the number and nature of consumer complaints about our student loan servicing work," Eileen Rivera, VP of public relations and communications at Maximus, told CNET.
In addition to this report, more than 90 borrowers have filed complaints with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau since the beginning of 2022. Many complaints allege that borrowers received incorrect account or loan information from Maximus. In her comment to CNET, Rivera pointed out that the number of complaints is small relative to the 5.6 million borrower accounts Aidvantage services on behalf of the FSA.
"Aidvantage uses CFPB and other consumer feedback as a regular part of our quality assurance and continuous improvement efforts," Rivera said. "We welcome that collaboration."
This news follows the recent $1.86 billion settlement Navient reached in a lawsuit accusing the student loan servicer of engaging in abusive and deceptive student loan practices.
Aidvantage currently services loans for more than 13 million borrowers, for a total of $449 billion worth of student loan debt, according to the Student Borrower Protection Center. In response to the March 2022 report, the SBPC and the Communications Workers of America launched AidvantageWatch, a website designed to help borrowers share their Aidvantage and Maximus experiences. It also hosts access to resources for alerting regulators and officials of any deceptive practices.

NHTSA Upgrades Tesla Autopilot Investigation, One Step Closer to Recall
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration last August opened an investigation into Tesla's Autopilot driver-assist system, focused on crashes involving emergency vehicles when Autopilot was active. Now, it's upgrading that investigation, which brings the probe one step closer to becoming a possible recall.
NHTSA this week announced that it was upgrading its inquiry into approximately 830,000 Tesla vehicles equipped with Autopilot. In related documents published by NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation, the government said it was taking this step "to extend the existing crash analysis, evaluate additional data sets, perform vehicle evaluations, and explore the degree to which Autopilot and associated Tesla systems may exacerbate human factors or behavioral safety risks by undermining the effectiveness of the driver's supervision."
The engineering analysis also brings in data from six additional incidents between November 2020 and January 2022, in addition to the 10 already under investigation. During this probe, NHTSA has reviewed more than 100 Tesla crashes involving both Autopilot and the automaker's Full Self Driving beta software. NHTSA also asked a dozen other automakers to submit data from their own SAE Level 2 systems.
From the data it's collected thus far, NHTSA noted in its investigation document that forward collision warnings activated "in the majority of incidents" just before impact, with automatic emergency braking engaging in roughly half of those collisions. NHTSA also noted that "Autopilot aborted vehicle control less than one second prior to the first impact" on average.
This brings NHTSA one step closer to the possibility of compelling Tesla to recall its vehicles, which include variants of the Model 3, Model S, Model X and Model Y sold between the 2014 and 2022 model years. Tesla could also initiate a voluntary recall if it so chose. The automaker does not operate a public relations team and thus could not be reached for comment.
Tesla is no stranger to government scrutiny outside this investigation. In early June, NHTSA asked Tesla to deliver data in regard to multiple reports of "phantom braking," where the vehicle will engage its brakes for seemingly no reason. Autopilot has also landed on the Federal Trade Commission's radar, with Reuters reporting that FTC Chair Lina Khan would neither confirm nor deny its own separate probe into Autopilot's efficacy, which could legally compel the automaker to change how it describes Autopilot's functionality to consumers.

WhatsApp said Wednesday that it's expanding the ways businesses can connect with people on the popular Facebook-owned messaging app. But businesses will have to pay to send certain messages, marking the free app's first major move to pull in revenue.
Businesses will be able to do things like provide real-time customer service and send information like boarding passes or shipping confirmations, WhatsApp wrote in a blog post. The company also said messages will remain "end-to-end encrypted" and that users will be able to block businesses.
Companies will pay between a half a penny and 9 cents for every message delivered to a potential customer, reported The Wall Street Journal. WhatsApp will also reportedly be launching ads in its Status feature, a tool similar to Instagram stories.
The new WhatsApp business features come as Facebook's growth decelerates. The social network missed analyst estimates in its quarterly earnings last week, resulting in its stock taking a historic plunge.
WhatsApp's co-founder Jan Koum left the company in April. Kuom reportedly clashed with Facebook, which purchased the app in 2014 for $22 billion, over the social network's attempts to "use its personal data and weaken its encryption."
WhatsApp declined to comment. Facebook didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Garmin Lily review: One of the best smartwatches designed for women
The Lily's circular design and slim bezel comes closer to the look of a traditional women's wristwatch than any other smartwatch I've tested. That's because the $200 Garmin Lily is one of the first smartwatches designed specifically for women. Despite its smaller footprint, the Lily doesn't miss out on key health features you'd expect from a watch released in 2021. It offers SpO2 (or blood oxygen) readings, sleep tracking, workout tracking and 24/7 heart-rate monitoring with high and low heart-rate alerts.
If you want the fitness chops of a Garmin watch without the bulk, then the Lily is your jam. But if you want the Lily to act as a true second screen for your phone, this is not your watch. It doesn't have built-in GPS and it falls short on smart features offered by many other watches in the same price range. It's missing a voice assistant, contactless payments, music storage and the ability to run third-party apps.
A round watch face with a distinct style
The Lily is a petite 34mm circular watch with a simple touch screen and no physical buttons. It looks completely different from any other smartwatch that Garmin (or any company, really) has made before. It's also a far cry from some of Garmin's other sports watches, which have thick bezels and multiple buttons. There are two versions of the Lily: a $200 Sport edition with a silicone band and aluminum bezel, and a $250 Classic edition with a leather band and stainless steel bezel. I've been wearing the Sport edition for over a week and it's been comfortable to wear all day and all night. I sometimes forget it's on my wrist because it's so light at 24 grams (0.8 ounces).

I've been wearing smartwatches for so long now that I've almost forgotten how clunky they can look on me. Even though I'm just shy of 6 feet tall, I have fairly small wrists and even "small" smartwatches like the 40mm Apple Watch ($349 at eBay) or 40mm Galaxy Watch Active 2 ($200 at Amazon) seem to overpower them. The Lily is the first smartwatch I've tried that almost looks too small for me, so it would be perfect for even daintier wrists than mine. That said, I've never had an issue with reading text or interacting with the watch and I've mostly gotten used to the small size.
Rather than a color OLED display like some of the smartwatches mentioned above, the Lily has a monochrome LCD touchscreen that disappears into the background when on standby. There's also a cool pattern that's etched in the background of the watch that gives it a unique look when the screen is on or off.
There's also a haptic button in the lower part of the screen you can use to bring up the main menu to access workouts and settings.
The screen quality is not as disappointing as I expected after reading the specs on paper, even if it's not as sharp as some of its competitors. Text is legible, the icons are easy to recognize and the haptic button works as promised to bring up the main watch menu. The sacrifices in screen quality meant that I didn't have to charge this watch every day like some of its competitors, which felt like a fair trade in my book. I managed to get around 3.5 to 4 days out of the Lily before needing to charge. Unlike other recent Garmin watches that use the same charging cable, the Lily uses an alligator-style clip charger that clamps over part of the screen. It's a bit awkward to use. You'll be able to change out the band with a special tool that comes when you buy a replacement from Garmin.com.

The Lily's biggest downside
Garmin's focus on size and simplicity also meant the Lily doesn't have onboard GPS, which is something I look for in a smartwatch, particularly one that's main focus is fitness. Instead, it relies on connected GPS from your phone in order to track your distance and route information. This means you have to take your phone with you on an outdoor bike ride, run or walk.
It was especially disappointing after just having reviewed the Garmin Venu Sq ($200 at Crutchfield), which does have built-in GPS and costs the same as the Lily. If you're looking to track your steps, yoga, Pilates or stationary weights sessions, for example, the Lily is ideal. But runners or cyclists will probably want a watch that can track routes without a phone.
SpO2 and sleep tracking, but no new health features
There are no big surprises with the health tracking features on Lily, especially if you're familiar with any other Garmin watch. It tracks your sleep and gives you a breakdown of the different stages of sleep (REM, light or deep sleep) through the Garmin Connect app when you wake up. There's also a pulse oximeter that can give you a spot reading of your blood oxygen on demand and also takes background readings while you sleep. The app then uses all this data to come up with a body battery score for the day which gives you a sense of how rested you are and help you determine what kind of exercise (if any) you should focus on for the day.

The Lily also has health tracking features specifically for women, like pregnancy tracking and cycle tracking, but they're not exclusive to the Lily. Garmin's most recent smartwatches like the Garmin Venu Sq have them as well.

Note that the Lily doesn't have fall detection like the Apple Watch SE ($280 at eBay) or Series 6, or the Galaxy Watch 3 ($399 at Amazon). But Lily does support Garmin's LiveTrack, which lets you send your location during a workout to specific contacts in case of an emergency.

Smart features are pretty bare bones
This watch feels more like a sophisticated fitness tracker than a fully fledged smartwatch. You can do the basics on the Lily, like seeing notifications from your phone on the screen, but there's no voice assistant, third-party app support, or third-party watch faces to download. There's also no onboard music storage (although you do get music playback control) and it also lacks a speaker and microphone to dictate text responses, or taking a quick call from your wrist.
The watch is compatible with both iOS and Android phones, but only Android users can respond to text messages using quick replies. The vibration motor is a little noisy when you get a notification, or when you want to start and stop an activity, but it's strong and I never failed to notice it buzz on my wrist. I also found I needed to turn gesture sensitivity to its highest setting so raising it to wake the screen would work reliably.
There's also a calendar, alarms and the ability to ping your phone from the watch if it's in Bluetooth range.
A pretty watch that's more fitness tracker than smartwatch
If you've been put off by chunky sports watches before, the Garmin Lily is a capable fitness watch alternative that offers style and substance. It's ideal if you've never owned a smartwatch before, or you're looking for an upgrade from a basic fitness tracker.
But looks (and maybe battery life) are pretty much the only things setting this smartwatch apart as there's no shortage of competition in the $200 to $300 range from other unisex options (including Garmin's own Venu Sq) which offer more smart features and built-in GPS.

Apple Employees Criticize Return-to-Work Plan, Call for More Flexibility
A group of Apple employees is demanding more flexibility from the tech giant ahead of its planned return to office work later this month. In an open letter, the group, calling itself Apple Together, said the company's plan for many employees to be in the office three fixed days a week offers "almost no flexibility at all" and could be damaging to diversity.
"The Hybrid Working Pilot is not an increase in flexibility, it is a smokescreen and often a step back in flexibility for many of our teams," reads the letter, which was posted Friday and earlier reported by CNN. "We are not asking for everyone to be forced to work from home. We are asking to decide for ourselves, together with our teams and direct manager, what kind of arrangement works best for each one of us, be that in an office, work from home, or a hybrid approach."
Like other tech companies, Apple delayed its return-to-office plans several times amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The iPhone maker now expects many employees to work in office at least three days a week by May 23, reported Bloomberg, though some teams may be required to be in the office more often.
Apple has already faced public pushback from some employees who've asked it to consider more-flexible work options, though the company's leadership has stressed that it believes in-person collaboration is essential.
About 200 employees are engaging in the Apple Together group, according to CNN, a small portion of the company's US workforce. The group says Apple has 100,000 direct employees in the US, including retail workers.
The Apple Together group also alleged that the hybrid plan could change the makeup of Apple's workforce, saying it will make the company "younger, whiter, more male-dominated," by squeezing out those who can't relocate for a position or afford to pay for family care. In the letter, the group also said the hybrid plan doesn't reflect the message Apple sends to customers that its products are great for remote work.
"We tell all of our customers how great our products are for remote work," reads the letter, "yet, we ourselves, cannot use them to work remotely? How can we expect our customers to take that seriously?"

The North American Car, Truck and Utility of the Year judges have rendered their verdict. For 2022, the Honda Civic is the Car of the Year, the Ford Maverick is the Truck of the Year and the Ford Bronco is the Utility of the Year. Each vehicle beat out stiff competition to take the crown in each respective segment after jurors (disclaimer: some Roadshow staff were on the panel) weeded through 36 vehicles, then to 26 semifinalists and a final nine choices -- three candidates for each award.
The Civic is a good one, indeed.

The Civic, however, received the most votes and waves of praise for its packaging, fun-to-drive manners and value. It also ends a streak of truck awards for more typical body-on-frame pickups.

This match pit Seth Rollins, Finn Balor, Ausitn Theory, Kevin Owens and Lashley (Team Raw) against Drew McIntyre, Happy Corbin, Jeff Hardy, Xaiver Woods and Sheamus (Team SmackDown). Seth Rollins ended up the winner, beating SmackDown's Jeff Hardy to snag the victory for Raw.
It began with Kevin Owens arguing with Team Raw about who's starting. Eventually, captain Rollins relented and let Owens start. Owens got fired up to fight with SmackDown's Xavier Woods -- and then bailed outside and walked up the ramp to purposefully get himself counted out. Nice heel move. Right off the bat, it's 5-4.
The numbers were evened up about five minutes later, when Raw's Finn Balor pinned and eliminated SmackDown's Happy Corbin. As Team Raw took turns working over SmackDown's Jeff Hardy, Lashley took out Drew McIntyre on the outside by putting McIntyre on his shoulders and slamming his head into the turnbuckle.
Lashley's roll continued when, after Hardy managed to tag in Woods, Lashley tagged himself in, Speared Woods and tapped him out to the Hurt Lock. So much for King of the Ring. Team SmackDown then all jumped on Bobby Lashley, but Balor and Rollins came to make the save, hitting stereo Sling Blades on Hardy and Sheamus, which was fun.
McIntyre tagged himself in, leading to a Lashley-McIntyre showdown. It was a great few minutes, with the men hitting big impact moves on each other and spilling to the outside. Lashley tried to ram McIntyre's head into the turnbuckle again, but McIntyre countered. As the two were fighting though, both McIntyre and Lashley got counted out and eliminated. McIntyre clocked Lashley with a Claymore on the way out. Rollins taunted McIntyre and ate a Glasgow Kiss for his troubles before McIntyre walked himself out.
After the dust cleared, Sheamus and Finn Balor traded moves in the ring, culminating in Sheamus eliminating Raw's Finn Balor with a Brogue Kick. It's now 2 on 2, Sheamus and Jeff Hardy for SmackDown against Austin Theory and Rollins for Raw.
Sheamus and Hardy worked together well, both hitting Sheamus' 10 clubbing blows on the apron, which the crowd loved. But Sheamus was eliminated after Rollins knocked out Hardy on the outside and Sheamus, going for a tag but finding no partner, was rolled up by Theory. Sheamus struck down Theory on his way out -- and also hit Hardy with a clothesline for apparently not being a good partner.
The final three men were Hardy, fighting for Team SmackDown, against Theory and Rollins. After Sheamus laid out Hardy, Rollins immediately went for a Frog Splash, getting a two count. The crowd came alive for Hardy, cheering him on. Those cheers got much louder when Hardy eliminated Theory after a Swanton Bomb, making it Rollins versus Hardy.
Seth Rollins attempted a Curb Stomp but Hardy countered and landed a Twist of Fate. As he scaled the ropes, the crowd went wild, hoping for a Hardy win. He attempted a Swanton Bomb, but Seth Rollins got his knees up and won the match for Team Raw with a Curb Stomp.
Rating: 3.75 stars. A lot of great action is this match, though I'm not quite sure what it achieved. It all depends on where WWE is going. I'm assuming McIntyre will soon challenge for Reigns' Universal Championship, so having him get counted out with no eliminations was strange. The biggest badass of the match was Bobby Lashley, but he's not scheduled for a title match -- Rollins is. Rollins was the sole survivor though, so at least that makes sense.

Apple Music free trial period drops to one month
Apple has reduced the free trial period for Apple Music for new subscribers from three months to one month. The change, spotted earlier by MacRumors, applies to all tiers of Apple's streaming music service, according to the Apple Music website.
Apple Music has offered a three-month free trial to new subscribers since its launch in 2015. Prices for Apple Music, which start at $5 a month for the Voice plan and go up to $15 a month for a family plan, remain the same.
It's still possible for new subscribers to get six months of Apple Music at no additional cost with the purchase of some AirPod, Beats and HomePod devices.
As people have shifted to streaming music services, Apple Music and Spotify raced each other to dominate subscription music. Spotify remains the biggest streaming service by both listeners and subscribers, but Apple Music has benefited from the popularity of the iPhone and other devices to recruit new subscribers.
Apple didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

The new Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro took the spotlight at Tuesday's Pixel event, but many other Pixel phone owners can now get many of the new enhancements shown off today by updating to Android 12. Google announced that Android 12 has begun its rollout to the Pixel 3 series and up, and with it those phones will receive the brand-new Material You interface, along with a variety of new tricks.
The Android 12 software has been available in beta for the past few months, and this public version coming to the Pixel phones will eventually roll out to Samsung Galaxy, OnePlus, Oppo and other phones later this year. However, it's worth noting that Pixel owners will likely have a degree of exclusivity with the version of Android 12 coming to their phones: Google has often given Pixel phones sole access to apps like its excellent Recorder app with live transcriptions. For now, we know that Android 12's custom color themes will, at least initially, be a Pixel exclusive.
Other new features for Android 12 include an improved privacy dashboard, changes to how notifications are displayed, a new one-handed mode, and a notification history for recovering pings you swiped away. The software release arrives alongside the new $599 (£599) Pixel 6 and $899 (£849) Pixel 6 Pro, which each feature a new design that highlights the phone's camera bar, Google's new in-house Tensor chip and enhanced photography and live translation. Origin PC's one of the first out of the gate in the race to ship gaming laptops with Nvidia's latest mobile gaming graphics processor, the GeForce RTX 3080. Its slim 17-inch Evo17-S checks many of the boxes I expect from a gaming laptop, including a big screen, lots of fast SSD storage, a speedy eight-core Intel Core i7-10870H processor and the power GPU.
Although I've only performed a teensy bit of testing on the system, I'm impressed so far with Nvidia's new flagship and haven't had any issues with the laptop (which is nontrivial). But the devil's in the details -- or in this case, the gaming -- and I haven't had much time to get down to that.

During my preliminary testing of this model and the Asus ROG Flow X13 with its XG Mobile sidekick, the GPU performed comparably to the same RTX 3080 mobile in the XG Mobile eGPU. Where the Origin lags, it could be due to being crammed into a smaller space with other components that run hot, as well as possible compromises for the Max-Q design. The Evo17-S is substantially less expensive at $2,194 (about £1,600 or AU$2,830), though, and Origin PC lets you configure and customize your machine.
But neither does the Evo17-S use Nvidia Optimus or even better, Advanced Optimus technology, which allows the built-in display to run on the discrete-GPU bus rather than the integrated GPU, where it's only used for processing, not to deliver data directly to the display. That can result in lesser performance in some situations. It does have a Mini DisplayPort connection, however, so you can get better performance and your G-Sync jollies on an external monitor.
I have a lot more work to do before I'm ready to formally review the Evo17-S, but a few aspects of the design jumped out at me. The power connection, Mini DisplayPort and HDMI ports are on the back, which is a good place for them. That lets you attach devices from either side without the connectors getting in the way. On the other hand, there's only a single USB-C/Thunderbolt port, and given how large the laptop is, I'd expect a full-size SD card slot and not just a mini SD.
I'll be back with my review after I've had a chance to torture it some more.

If you're looking for a fitness tracker that offers the best available features for collecting health data, while also being comfortable, easy to use (no buttons) and easy to read outside in the sunshine -- all at a reasonable price -- Fitbit's Charge 5 wins. In fact, the Charge 5 was recently awarded a CNET's Editors' Choice Award.
The Charge 5 tracks things such as your heart rate through an EKG reading app, your stress level through an electrodermal activity sensor, and your blood oxygen level and skin temperature. It also tracks your sleep patterns, including breathing rates, sleep stages and restlessness. The Charge 5 monitors over 20 different physical activities, including swimming (it's water-resistant), yoga and cycling. It also has a built-in GPS, which is great for runners and has 20 exercise modes.
The Charge 5 is compatible with iPhones and Androids. However, iPhone users can only see notifications on the Charge 5 screen, while Android users may send quick replies.

The Versa 3 is a Fitbit smartwatch that combines the best features of the Charge 5 tracker with the "taking calls on your wrist" aspect of a smartwatch rather than purely a fitness tracker. Although Fitbit's best smartwatch and best Apple Watch alternative may not be quite as smart as its Apple or Galaxy Watch competitors, it does pair with an Android or iPhone and can also be paired with either Alexa or Google Assistant. One of the best features of the Versa 3 is its strong battery life -- up to six days without the "always on" display and with moderate use. (The Apple Watch, for comparison, has a less-than-ideal battery life of a day and a half.)
The more expensive Fitbit Sense provides more health data, but the relevance of all the data Sense gives you might be moot, depending on if you know how to read medical charts. You'll save money and lose little by going for the Versa 3 smartwatch instead.
A note about Fitbit's Premium subscription: For $10 a month or a one-time payment of $80 for a year, Fitbit's Premium subscription can give you more insight into your sleep and stress patterns, as well as things such as guided meditation and workouts. The Versa 3 comes with a three-month trial of Premium, and the Charge 5 comes with a six-month period. To find out more about whether Fitbit Premium is worth it, check out this guide.
Fitbit Premium also includes what it calls a Daily Readiness Score, which is Fitbit's assessment of whether you need to take it easy today or if you should push yourself based on your goals for the week. This is now available for some Fitbit models, including the Versa 3.

The Fitbit Inspire 2 is the cheapest device for adults, and it gets the job done. The "easy" Fitbit tracks health essentials that include Active Zone Minutes and heart rate. The Inspire 2 comes with a free yearlong premium subscription so you can unlock personalized health insights and programs to help you improve your nutrition, sleep and other aspects of health.
The Inspire 2 doesn't have GPS, and it doesn't include special features such as being able to measure your blood oxygen level, but this tracker is a great (and more affordable) introduction to fitness tracking if you or someone you know is interested in monitoring their health information. The Inspire 2's included subscription to Fitbit Premium is also far more generous than other Fitbit models.
Fitbit
If you want to count your steps and look like you're wearing jewelry instead of a fitness device, the Fitbit Luxe is for you. It offers many of the same features as other Fitbits, such as goal-based workouts, but it does so in a smaller and more fashionable form that might be best for smaller wrists. (The design in general is smaller, so the text on the watch's screen may also be too small for some people to read.)
Aside from its sleeker appearance, the biggest difference between the Luxe and other models might be its focus on general wellness tracking over more specific health data. When the Luxe calculates your stress rate, for example, it uses activity levels, sleep and heart rate instead of an electrodermal activity sensor as seen in the Charge 5 and Sense.

This one is pretty simple: The Fitbit Ace 3 is specifically for kids to help track sleep and activity, two crucial things for young bodies. Goals can be set on the Ace 3 for active minutes as well as reminders for going to bed and staying active. For kids who have their own phone, the tracker can also deliver call notifications (you know, for when you forget to call Mom).
The Ace 3 comes in cosmic blue with green adjusters, black with red adjusters or a "Minions yellow" for kids who are fans of the goggle-eyed animated creatures.

There's no shortage of made-up national holidays. Among the fabricated celebrations: Houseplant Appreciation Day, Irish Coffee Day and Bubble Wrap Day.
However, there is one such holiday actually worth observing: Data Privacy Day, which happens to be Friday. It's a good reminder to check up on the safety of your personal data. The holiday began in the US and Canada back in 2008. It's an extension of a European holiday marking 1981's Convention 108, the first legally binding international treaty on protecting privacy and data.
The day, which will be marked by security companies and privacy advocates, provides an opportunity to take stock of where your personal data is and who has access to it. Keeping tabs on that data is especially important as we close out the second year of a global pandemic that has forced many people to do a lot more online than they previously did.
It's also important to remember that protecting your data and privacy means not just keeping your information safe from cybercriminals but also making sure you aren't sharing more than you need to with tech giants and other data harvesters.
Many consumers want to make data protection a priority. Sixty percent of people polled in a survey released this month by McAfee, a security software company, said they had changed their personal online behavior to enhance their data security. And 52 percent said they had installed new security tools like antivirus software or a password manager on their devices in an effort to better lock them down.
Here are a few easy ways to safeguard your data.
Set good passwords. Long, random and unique passwords are best. Don't be tempted to recycle an old one, even if it's great. Need help? Get a password manager.
Turn on two-factor authentication. This technique requires entering a second identifier -- like a biometric, app notification or a physical key -- in addition to your password. This will go a long way toward protecting you if your password gets compromised.
Note: Avoid using SMS messages for two-factor authentication. Why? SIM swapping, in which cybercriminals steal your phone number by calling your wireless provider and having it switch your number to a new phone and SIM card. It does happen, and if criminals take over your phone number, they'll get that text message, too.
Keep an eye on your accounts. Monitor your bank and credit accounts for potentially fraudulent charges. If you don't expect to be applying for credit anytime soon, freeze your credit reports.
Lock down your social media accounts. Make sure the only "friends" you're sharing your information with are your actual friends. Even then, be careful what you disclose, especially when it comes to social media quizzes and other games. Seemly innocuous bits of information like the make and model of your first car or the elementary school you attended could be used to hack your passwords down the road, because those facts are often used in security checks.
Audit your logins and apps. Using Facebook or Google to automatically log in to your apps and websites gives them access to more of your data. Think twice before you do it. Not using an app anymore? Delete it and take away its access to the data you agreed to share when you first downloaded it.
Update everything. This doesn't just apply to your operating systems and antivirus software. Your router, apps and all of those "internet of things" devices also need to be up to date. Patches to fix bugs and security problems can't help you if you don't install them. If you don't know how to update your router, call your ISP or check online.

Unlimited storage for Google Photos
One big reason to get a Pixel is unlimited storage in Google Photos. Unlike other non-Pixel handsets, Pixel phones have no data cap for backing up photos to the cloud. Photos you take on a Pixel will be saved in their original quality, not automatically compressed to save space. The extent of this benefit varies based on the Pixel you pick up: If you can find the first Pixel phone released in 2016, you should be able to upload photos at original quality for the life of the device.

Pixel phones will enjoy unlimited storage on Google Photos. Other handsets will not.

Later Pixel phones, such as the more recently released Pixel 5 and Pixel 4A 5G, allow unlimited photo uploads at a compressed storage-saver quality. Google outlines the rules for each Pixel phone on this support page.
Unfortunately, it does appear the 2020 Pixel phones will likely be the last to get the unlimited storage benefit. Google does not plan to extend this benefit to the next wave of Pixel phones, according to several reports from The Verge and Tom's Guide, among others.

No bloatware, ever
The menace of unwanted apps, services and often redundant software features continues to plague most Android phones subsidized by US wireless carriers. Not so with Google Pixel handsets. What you get is the pristine Android OS the way Google originally designed it, not masked with odd skins, proprietary overlays or strange UIs.
Pixel phones have access to beta software like new OS versions and features.

Besides unfettered storage for photos, Google has pledged to make updating its Pixel phones a priority. Whenever a new Android OS version or security patch rolls out, it'll arrive on Pixels first. That includes new features separate from full OS updates. And for the truly adventurous, Pixels have first dibs on beta Android versions as well.
All Pixel phones are available in Google Fi cellular network versions.

Google Fi is always an option
While not a massive force in the wireless carrier market, Google does offer its own cellular service for mobile devices. Called Google Fi (not to be confused with Google Fiber), this MVNO-style system offers pay-as-you-go data plans. It also uses technology that enables seamless switching between Wi-Fi and cellular networks during voice calls.
All Pixel phones come in versions specifically designed to operate on Google Fi. These phones are also unlocked so you can port them over to another carrier if you'd like. For instance, the Pixel 5A is available in both Unlocked and Google Fi (also unlocked) versions.
Things get more complicated, though, when choosing a Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro. Google sells three varieties of each: Verizon, Google Fi (unlocked) and Unlocked (no specific carrier). The models without a specified carrier will work on all major US carrier networks. That said, they aren't all fully compatible with each carrier's 5G network.
Squash that spam
If you're constantly assaulted by a deluge of unwanted scam or shady marketing calls, then you'll find this Pixel feature compelling. The Pixel Call Screen function in the phone app works with Google Assistant to stop robocalls from reaching you. Together they can prevent unknown callers from making your phone ring, or screen calls for you in real time.
A sweet phone deal
Right now one of our favorite phones on the market is the $399 Pixel 5A. Compatible with 5G cellular networks, this budget-friendly handset has an excellent ultrawide camera and a big OLED display. It also enjoys strong software support from Google and the promise of timely updates for up to three years. And at $500 less than the price of the $899 Pixel 6 Pro, or $200 less than the $599 Pixel 6, it's a tempting alternative.
